Announcing the inaugural Australian Drone Racing Championship!
We have heard from our pilots - you love racing against each other, but once a year at Nationals and a few ad-hoc events throughout the year is not enough.
Club events are great, but racing with more pilots is even better. We know throughout the year there are a number of major events that are bigger than monthly club races, but not at the scale of a Drone Nationals. We love attending and racing at these events, but what do they really mean? is there any connection to them? So the Australian Drone Racing Championship is the solution. For a full season - Nationals to Nationals, major events will be part of a connected series for pilots to earn points and to be crowned the season champion.
The Championship is not restricted to Open Class - it is Multi-Class. So the Australian Tiny Whoop Champs, want to run a ProSpec Major event? How about X-Class? If you run it, pilots race it - it can count!
We all know that MantisFPV are massive supports of Australian Drone Racing and we are immensely proud to have them onboard as the title sponsors of the inaugural Australian Drone Racing Championship!
So what events could be in the championship? Events like:
- Flightfest
- Avalon AirShow
- Australian Tiny Whoop Championships
- Mountain Mayhem
- Any more!
Clubs can host events and apply for AUFPV sanctioning. Sanctioned events are then added to the Championship. Every AUFPV affiliated club is entitled to host one Tier 3 event. This could just be a standard club race day if you want. To be able to host another event, it needs to be bigger and a major event (like those listed) to be awarded Tier 2 or Tier 1 points.
Tier allocations are based on the number of pilots that are attending the event (with the exception of the club event which is always Tier 3). The Championship is designed to encourage more pilots to attend more events and to help event organisers get more pilots racing with them!
The Australian Drone Nationals remains as the pinnacle of our sport - it is the Grand Final of the Championship. Nothing changes, you still need to qualify for nationals just like always, however the points available for Nationals get a special 3x multiplier. So if you win nationals.... You've got a real chance of taking home the championship, but don't leave it all to that chance - pick up points along the way to secure your crown!
Clubs can apply for sanctioning via the AUFPV platform on their own club sites. Clubs not yet on the platform can reach out to AUFPV to get their events added manually.
The Championship kicks off this month with Canberra Multirotor Racing Club hosting their season finale and the first club Tier 3 event of the Championship. If you want to land on the national ladder - go get racing!
Spread the word to your club.
